The 14 Characteristics of Fascism

Political scientist Dr. Lawrence Britt recently wrote an article about fascism ("Fascism Anyone?," Free Inquiry, Spring 2003, page 20). Studying the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia), and Pinochet (Chile), Dr. Britt found they all had 14 elements in common. He calls these the identifying characteristics of fascism. The excerpt is in accordance with the magazine's policy. 

The 14 characteristics are: 
  1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
  2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc. 
  3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc. 
  4. Supremacy of the Military Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized. 
  5. Rampant Sexism The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy. 
  6. Controlled Mass Media Sometimes the media are directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media are indirectly controlled by government regulation or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
  7. Obsession with National Security Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
  8. Religion and Government are Intertwined Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions. 
  9. Corporate Power is Protected The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite. 
  10. Labor Power is Suppressed Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed . 
  11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts. 
  12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations. 
  13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders. 
  14. Fraudulent Elections Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights

1   All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

2   Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.

3   Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.

4   No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.

5   No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

6   Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law.

7   All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of the Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination.

8   Everyone has the right to an effective remedy by the competent national tribunals for acts violating the fundamental rights granted him by the constitution or by law.

9   No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.

10   Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, in the determination of his rights and obligations and of any criminal charge against him.

11 1   Everyone charged with a penal offense has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defense.
  2   No one shall be held guilty of any penal offense on account of any act or omission which did not constitute a penal offense, under national or international law, at the time it was committed. Nor shall a heavier penalty be imposed than the one that was applicable at the time the penal offense was committed.

12    No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honor and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.

13 1   Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state.
  2   Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.

14 1   Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.
  2   This right may not be invoked in the case of prosecutions genuinely arising from non-political crimes or from acts contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.

15 1   Everyone has the right to a nationality.
  2   No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality nor denied the right to change his nationality.

16 1   Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution.
  2   Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses.
  3   The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State.

17 1   Everyone has the right to own property alone as well as in association with others.
  2   No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his property.

18     Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.

19     Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression: this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

20 1   Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association.
  2   No one may be compelled to belong to an association.

21 1   Everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives.
  2   Everyone has the right of equal access to public service in his country.
  3   The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.

22     Everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security and is entitled to realization, through national effort and international co- operation and in accordance with the organization and resources of each State, of the economic, social and cultural rights indispensable for his dignity and the free development of his personality.

23 1   Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favorable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment.
  2   Everyone, without any discrimination, has the right to equal pay for equal work.
  3   Everyone who works has the right to just and favorable remuneration ensuring for himself and his family an existence worthy of human dignity, and supplemented, if necessary, by other means of social protection.
  4   Everyone has the right to form and to join trade unions for the protection of his interests.

24     Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay.

25 1   Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.
  2   Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection.

26 1   Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.
  2   Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace.
  3   Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children.

27 1   Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits.
  2   Everyone has the right to the protection of the moral and material interests resulting from any scientific, literary or artistic production of which he is the author.

28   Everyone is entitled to a social and international order in which the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration can be fully realized.

29 1   Everyone has duties to the community in which alone the free and full development of his personality is possible.
  2   In the exercise of his rights and freedoms, everyone shall be subject only to such limitations as are determined by law solely for the purpose of securing due recognition and respect for the rights and freedoms of others and of meeting the just requirements of morality, public order and the general welfare in a democratic society.
  3   These rights and freedoms may in no case be exercised contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.

30     Nothing in this Declaration may be interpreted as implying for any State, group or person any right to engage in any activity or to perform any act aimed at the destruction of any of the rights and freedoms set forth herein.

77 questions commonly asked by journalists during an emergency or crisis


Journalists are likely to ask six questions in a crisis (who, what, where, when, why, how) that relate to three broad topics: (1) what happened; (2) what caused it to happen; (3) what does it mean.  Specific questions include:
  1. What is your name and title?
  2. What are you job responsibilities?
  3. What are your qualifications?
  4. Can you tell us what happened?
  5. When did it happen?
  6. Where did it happen?
  7. Who was harmed?
  8. How many people were harmed, injured, or killed?
  9. Are those that were harmed getting help?
  10. How are those who were harmed getting help?
  11. What can others do to help?
  12. Is the situation under control?
  13. Is there anything good that you can tell us?
  14. Is there any immediate danger?
  15. What is being done in response to what happened?
  16. Who is in charge?
  17. What can we expect next?
  18. What are you advising people to do?
  19. How long will it be before the situation returns to normal?
  20. What help has been requested or offered from others?
  21. What responses have you received?
  22. Can you be specific about the types of harm that occurred?
  23. What are the names of those that were harmed?
  24. Can we talk to them?
  25. How much damage occurred?
  26. What other damage may have occurred?
  27. How certain are you about damage?
  28. How much damage do you expect?
  29. What are you doing now?
  30. Who else is involved in the response?
  31. Why did this happen?
  32. What was the cause?
  33. Did you have any forewarning that this might happen?
  34. Why wasn’t this prevented from happening?
  35. What else can go wrong?
  36. If you are not sure of the cause, what is your best guess?
  37. Who caused this to happen?
  38. Who is to blame?
  39. Could this have been avoided?
  40. Do you think those involved handled the situation well enough?
  41. When did your response to this begin?
  42. When were you notified that something had happened?
  43. Who is conducting the investigation?
  44. What are you going to do after the investigation?
  45. What have you found out so far?
  46. Why was more not done to prevent this from happening?
  47. What is your personal opinion?
  48. What are you telling your own family?
  49. Are all those involved in agreement?
  50. Are people over reacting?
  51. Which laws are applicable?
  52. Has anyone broken the law?
  53. What challenges are you facing?
  54. Has anyone made mistakes?
  55. What mistakes have been made?
  56. Have you told us everything you know?
  57. What are you not telling us?
  58. What effects will this have on the people involved?
  59. What precautionary measures were taken?
  60. Do you accept responsibility for what happened?
  61. Has this ever happened before?
  62. Can this happen elsewhere?
  63. What is the worst case scenario?
  64. What lessons were learned?
  65. Were those lessons implemented?
  66. What can be done to prevent this from happening again?
  67. What would you like to say to those that have been harmed and to their families?
  68. Is there any continuing the danger?
  69. Are people out of danger? Are people safe?
  70. Will there be inconvenience to employees or to the public?
  71. How much will all this cost?
  72. Are you able and willing to pay the costs?
  73. Who else will pay the costs?
  74. When will we find out more?
  75. What steps need to be taken to avoid a similar event?
  76. Have these steps already been taken? If not, why not?
  77. What does this all mean? Is there anything else you want to tell us?

38 stratagems

Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) was a German philosopher. These 38 stratagems are excerpted from "The Art of Controversy," first translated into English in 1896. Schopenhauer's 38 ways to win an argument are:
  1. Carry your opponent's proposition beyond its natural limits; exaggerate it. The more general your opponent's statement becomes, the more objections you can find against it. The more restricted and narrow his or her propositions remain, the easier they are to defend by him or her. 
  2. Use different meanings of your opponent's words to refute his or her argument. 
  3. Ignore your opponent's proposition, which was intended to refer to a particular thing. Rather, understand it in some quite different sense, and then refute it. Attack something different than that which was asserted. 
  4. Hide your conclusion from your opponent till the end. Mingle your premises here and there in your talk. Get your opponent to agree to them in no definite order. By this circuitous route you conceal your game until you have obtained all the admissions that are necessary to reach your goal. 
  5. Use your opponent's beliefs against him. If the opponent refuses to accept your premises, use his own premises to your advantage. 
  6. Another plan is to confuse the issue by changing your opponent's words or what he or she seeks to prove. 
  7. State your proposition and show the truth of it by asking the opponent many questions. By asking many wide-reaching questions at once, you may hide what you want to get admitted. Then you quickly propound the argument resulting from the opponent's admissions. 
  8. Make your opponent angry. An angry person is less capable of using judgement or perceiving where his or her advantage lies. 
  9. Use your opponent's answers to your questions to reach different or even opposite conclusions. 
  10. If your opponent answers all your questions negatively and refuses to grant any points, ask him or her to concede the opposite of your premises. This may confuse the opponent as to which point you actually seek them to concede. 
  11. If the opponent grants you the truth of some of your premises, refrain from asking him or her to agree to your conclusion. Later, introduce your conclusion as a settled and admitted fact. Your opponent may come to believe that your conclusion was admitted. 
  12. If the argument turns upon general ideas with no particular names, you must use language or a metaphor that is favorable in your proposition. 
  13. To make your opponent accept a proposition, you must give him or her an opposite, counter-proposition as well. If the contrast is glaring, the opponent will accept your proposition to avoid being paradoxical. 
  14. Try to bluff your opponent. If he or she has answered several of your questions without the answers turning out in favor of your conclusion, advance your conclusion triumphantly, even if it does not follow. If your opponent is shy or stupid, and you yourself possess a great deal of impudence and a good voice, the trick may easily succeed. 
  15. If you wish to advance a proposition that is difficult to prove, put it aside for the moment. Instead, submit for your opponent's acceptance or rejection some true poposition, as thoug you wished to draw your proof from it. Should the opponent reject it because he or she suspects a trick, you can obtain your triumph by showing how absurd the opponent is to reject a true proposition. Should the opponent accept it, you now have reason on your own for the moment. You can either try to prove your original proposition or maintain that your original proposition is proved by what the opponent accepted. For this, an extreme degree of impudence is required. 
  16. When your opponent puts forth a proposition, find it inconsistent with his or her other statements, beliefs, actions, or lack of action. 
  17. If your opponent presses you with a counter proof, you will often be able to save yourself by advancing some subtle distinction. Try to find a second meaning or an ambiguous sense for your opponent's idea. 
  18. If your opponent has taken up a line of argument that will end in your defeat, you must not allow him or her to carry it to its conclusion. Interrupt the dispute, break it off altogether, or lead the opponent to a different subject. 
  19. Should your opponent expressly challenge you to produce any objection to some definite point in his or her argument, and you have nothing much to say, try to make the argument less specific. 
  20. If your opponent has admitted to all or most of your premises, do not ask him or her directly to accept your conclusion. Rather draw the conclusion yourself as if it too had been admitted. 
  21. When your opponent uses an argument that is superficial, refute it by setting forth its superficial character. But it is better to meet the opponent with a counter argument that is just as superficial, and so dispose of him or her. For it is with victory that your are concerned, and not with truth. 
  22. If your opponent asks you to admit something from which the point in dispute will immediately follow, you must refuse to do so, declaring that it begs the question. 
  23. Contradiction and contention irritate a person into exaggerating his or her statements. By contradicting your opponent you may drive him or her into extending the statement beyond its natural limit. When you then contradict the exaggerated form of it, you look as though you had refuted the original statement your opponent tries to extend your own statement further than you intended, redefine your statement's limits. 
  24. This trick consists in stating a false syllogism. Your opponent makes a proposition and by false inference and distortion of his or her ideas you force from the proposition other propositions that are not intended and that appear absurd. It then appears the opponent's proposition gave rise to these inconsistencies, and so appears to be indirectly refuted. 
  25. If your opponent is making a generalization, find an instance to the contrary. Only one valid contradiction is needed to overthrow the opponent's proposition. 
  26. A brilliant move is to turn the tables and use your opponent's arguments against him or herself. 
  27. Should your opponent surprise you by becoming particularly angry at an argument, you must urge it with all the more zeal. Not only will this make the opponent angry, it may be presumed that you put your finger on the weak side of his or her case, and that the opponent is more open to attack on this point than you expected. 
  28. This trick is chiefly practicable in a dispute if there is an audience who is not an expert on the subject. You make an invalid objection to your opponent who seems to be defeated in the eyes of the audience. This strategy is particularly effective if your objection makes the opponent look ridiculous or if the audience laughs. If the opponent must make a long, complicated explanation to correct you, the audience will not be disposed to listen. 
  29. If you find that you are being beaten, you can create a diversion that is, you can suddenly begin to talk of something else, as though it had bearing on the matter in dispose. This may be done without presumption if the diversion has some general bearing on the matter. 
  30. Make an appeal to authority rather than reason. If your opponent respects an authority or an expert, quote that authority to further your case. If needed, quote what the authority said in some other sense or circumstance. Authorities that your opponent fails to understand are those which he or she generally admires the most. You may also, should it be necessary, not only twist your authorities, but actually falsify them, or quote something that you have invented entirely yourself. 
  31. If you know that you have no reply to an argument that your opponent advances, you may, by a fine stroke of irony, declare yourself to be an incompetent judge. 
  32. A quick way of getting rid of an opponent's assertion, or throwing suspicion on it, is by putting it into some odious category. 
  33. You admit your opponent's premises but deny the conclusion. 
  34. When you state a question or an argument, and your opponent gives you no direct answer, or evades it with a counter question, or tries to change the subject, it is a sure sign you have touched a weak spot, sometimes without knowing it. You have as it were, reduced the opponent to silence. You must, therefore, urge the point all the more, and not let your opponent evade it, even when you do not know where the weakness that you have hit upon really lies. 
  35. This trick makes all unnecessary if it works. Instead of working on an opponent's intellect, work on his or her motive. If you succeed in making your opponent's opinion, should it prove true, seem distinctly to his or her own interest, the opponent will drop it like a hot potato. 
  36. You may also puzzle and bewilder your opponent by mere bombast. If the opponent is weak or does not wish to appear as ife he or she has no idea what you are talking about, you can easily impose upon him or her some argument that sounds very deep or learned, or that sounds indisputable. 
  37. Should your opponent be in the right but, luckily for you, choose a faulty proof, you can easily refute it and then claim that you have refuted the whole position. This is the way which bad advocates lose a good case. If no accurate proof occurs to the opponent or the bystanders, you have won the day. 
  38. A last trick is to become personal, insulting and rude as soon as you perceive that your opponent has the upper hand. In becoming personal you leave the subject altogether, and turn your attack on the person by remarks of an offensive and spiteful character. This is a very popular trick, because everyone is able to carry it into effect.

The Seven Sacred Principles

Among the Anishinaabe people, the Teachings of the Seven Grandfathers, also known simply as either the Seven Teachings or Seven Grandfathers, is a set of teachings on human conduct towards others. (http://www.whitewolfpack.com)
  1. Nibwaakaawin (Wisdom) -- To cherish knowledge is to know Wisdom. Wisdom is given by the Creator to be used for the good of the people. In the Anishinaabe language, this word expresses not only "wisdom," but also means "prudence," or "intelligence." In some communities, Gikendaasowin is used; in addition to "wisdom," this word can also mean "intelligence" or "knowledge."
  2. Zaagi'idiwin (Love) -- To know Love is to know peace. Love must be unconditional. When people are weak they need love the most. In the Anishinaabe language, this word with the reciprocal theme /idi/ indicates that this form of love is mutual. In some communities, Gizhaawenidiwin is used, which in most context means "jealousy" but in this context is translated as either "love" or "zeal". Again, the reciprocal theme indicates that this form of love is mutual.
  3. Minaadendamowin (Respect) -- To honor all creation is to have Respect. All of creation should be treated with respect. You must give respect if you wish to be respected. Some communities instead use Ozhibwaadenindiwin or Manazoonidiwin.
  4. Aakode'ewin (Bravery) -- Bravery is to face the foe with integrity. In the Anishinaabe language, this word literally means "state of having a fearless heart." To do what is right even when the consequences are unpleasant. Some communities instead use either Zoongadikiwin ("state of having a strong casing") or Zoongide'ewin ("state of having a strong heart").
  5. Gwayakwaadiziwin (Honesty) -- Honesty in facing a situation is to be brave. Always be honest in word and action. Be honest first with yourself, and you will more easily be able to be honest with others. In the Anishinaabe language, this word can also mean "righteousness."
  6. Dabaadendiziwin (Humility) -- Humility is to know yourself as a sacred part of Creation. In the Anishinaabe language, this word can also mean "compassion." You are equal to others, but you are not better. Some communities instead express this with Bekaadiziwin, which in addition to "humility" can also be translated as "calmness," "meekness," "gentility" or "patience."
  7. Debwewin (Truth) -- Truth is to know all of these things. Speak the truth. Do not deceive yourself or others.

Superstitions for writers

Never end a sentence with a preposition.
Never split an infinitive.
Never split a verb phrase.
Never begin a sentence with And or But.
Never write a one-sentence paragraph.
Never begin a sentence with Because.
Never use since to mean because.
Never use between with more than two objects.
Never use the first-person pronouns I and me.
Never use contractions.
Never use you in referring to your reader.

Jing Si aphorisms

When we make great vows, not only do we vow to benefit all sentient beings, we put those vows into practice in our daily lives.

The greatest opportunity is here and now!

We cannot make do without courage, we cannot make do without faith. There is nothing in this world that is impossible, nothing we cannot do. There is only what we are unwilling to do.

When we encounter challenges, it is not because the situation is difficult, but because our minds have become stuck.

Stopping the journey halfway is more troublesome than just reaching the end of the path.

Learn to keep an unwavering mind when dealing with the challenges of the people and things around us; learn to maintain quietness and stillness in movement.
